Bobby Worth has never met Jack Randolph, but he already resents the guy.  The whole town seems to think he'd be a better handyman or anything else than newcomer Bobby.  Bobby keeps his head down and works hard.  He has debts to pay and a past he'd rather nobody look at too hard.  Then he meets Jack, and he's as charmed as everyone else.  But there's more to Jack than the town seems to see.  Sensitive, musically gifted, and sweet-tempered, the guy lives a nomadic life, arriving for a few months and then leaving again to try and kick start a music career.  

Bobby plans on keeping his head down and minding his own business, trying to be a productive citizen after being exactly the opposite when he was younger.  He's always been an outcast and tells himself he doesn't care.  But now, he's finding himself drawn into Jack's life, and happy for excuses to spend time with him.  

As they become friends and that friendship deepens, Bobby keeps telling himself not to be weird about it.  Not to make waves, not to want anything, not to stand out.  Not to let himself long for this guy he used to resent.  But Jack makes time for him.  Jack makes him laugh.  Jack turns a bad day into a good one—and Bobby seems to have that effect on him, too.  

Maybe he should take this to mean he's actually capable of forming the kind of bond he wants.  Someday, he'd like to have a boyfriend for real.  But right now, he just wants to be around Jack, in whatever way he can.  Trusting Jack with his secrets, moving in together, spending time with each other more than anyone else...maybe it's not just him at this point?

A Happy Ending for Lowell

Hey guys!  You know my story about Sean and Tom, My Partner the Wolf?  Well, I have another one coming out soon, My Partner and Me, this time from Sean's point of view.  I'm working hard on the edits as we speak!

Anyway, a buddy of mine mentioned wishing that Lowell (who's kind of a bad guy in these stories!) could have a happy ending, reform, find someone who'd make him happy, etc.  I said I'd like to read that but didn't think I could write it right now.  I said they were welcome to write it, though, if they wanted to.

Guess what I got for Christmas?  That very story, written just for me!  I was over the moon--it was soooo good!  It made me like Lowell and want the best for him.  They made the character into somebody I could love.

Anyway, I encouraged my buddy to go ahead and publish this story.  I really think it's an awesome read.  I feel honored that A. Russo's first published story is based on one of my characters!!  And I hope they'll write many other things in future, too.

This story turned out weird.  It's just...the characters are weird.   It's not terribly sexy but the main character has, what my mother used to call "a dirty mouth on him." 

There are a couple of tongue in cheek references in this story--some of them more authentic than you'd think.  

I, like the author character in this book, am sometimes really annoyed by editing, and the fact that I've found myself writing "than" instead of "that" accidentally.  

I also do some of my editing on my ereader.  I also love Fiestaware.  (It's bright and pretty!).  I have a Doctor Who themed mug that I love.  I want to buy this shirt, although I don't own it yet: http://shirt.woot.com/offers/go-sports

And I really enjoy writing my stories, even if I don't always think they're very good.

All of a sudden he gave off an arf that told me to hurry up, and off he dashed into the undergrowth. 

What the hell? Well, I wasn't going to doubt him. 

I looked back at the men. "We're close. Radio for backup. And remember we're probably dealing with a hostage situation." 

We could all hope the girl was alive, anyway. He'd damned well better hope she was. Whoever he was. 

I saw one of them lifting the radio to call in more people. Then I charged into the undergrowth after Sean.

It wasn't fire. That weird hand thing was his signal for gay. I tried to swallow my snort of laughter, bent forward, and thumped a hand on my knee, my breathing jagged. I bit my lip. "L-Levi," I protested in a voice shaky with suppressed laughter. "There's—there's no guys."

"But you…" He made the hand gesture, and this time I let loose a hoot of laughter. "Gay," he said.

I caught him round the neck and pulled him nearer, till our faces were close. He searched my gaze, brows drawn close.

He hadn't been worried about my fire. He didn't give a shit about that. He was worried I was sleeping with a bunch of guys and not being safe about it. I could brain him. I could kiss him.

"Lee, there's nobody."

"But—"

"There just isn't."

"Then how—"

"How do I know I'm gay? Well, how do you know you don't like guys? It just… that's the way it is."

"But why… ?"

"My fire. Get it? What if I… I don't know. What if something happens? Do you really think I could risk so much, just to try testing the equipment properly?" I shrugged. "Besides, there's nobody I trust that much."

"Me," said Levi.

I gave him a hard look. "You're kinda taken."

He looked down at his lap, traced a pattern on his thigh with the thick nail of one hard, strong thumb. "Yeah." It came out sounding small, almost sad. "Jett, you know I—I just wish I could—"

"You can't fix everything for me. Just leave it."

I got up and walked to the kitchen, calming my breathing. I focused on the plant I had there, the color and shape of its leaves, and concentrated on my breaths.

He moved nearer. "I can't stand to see you like this."

"Like what?" I stared at the plant.

"I-I don't know. I feel like I'm hurting you." His arms slid around me carefully, and he held me with a cherishing tenderness that made me melt like a chocolate bar left in the sun.

"Y-you're not." I pushed him gently off. "Lee, I'm so glad you accept me. Maybe you could just not go out of your way to touch me right now?"

"Yeah." He looked away, touched his thumb to his nose. His voice was rough. "I just… I know. But how can I not? I finally have you back. I… I finally have you."

This is a full-length novel, really quite long, and it took me from one and a half to two years from start to finish.  (I can't remember exactly when I started it, and I haven't kept very good records, sorry!)  

In one sense it's difficult to actually let go and put it out there, to say goodbye to my boys.  But ah, it was time.  I hope you'll enjoy them as much as I did.  Okay, probably not possible--but at least a bit, maybe?

These are some of the books I've been reading recently.  I thought they were all excellent.

Harper Fox books

Does it sound strange to say that I always hesitate to start a new Harper Fox book?  They are such deeply emotional & beautifully written reads for me that I find myself almost unable to put the books down once I start one.  Sometimes it feels like I can hardly catch my breath until I find out what happens next.  At any rate, over the last couple of weeks I've read a bunch of them, gulping them down like I usually do, moved by the emotion and intensity and plots, but also by the beautiful writing style.  Fox is one of those authors that makes me want to be a better writer!  I don't know how she does it, but she always manages to make me care about her characters, even when I don't think I'll be able to!
